Green Initiative
WIB Sector Strategies
According to California’s Employment Development Department “green or clean” is any activity or service that performs at least one of the following:
- Generating and storing renewable energy
- Recycling existing materials
- Energy efficient product manufacturing, distribution, construction, installation, and maintenance
- Education, compliance and awareness
- Natural and sustainable product manufacturing
- Generating and storing renewable energy - Includes alternative energy generated by, but not limited to Wind, Solar, Water, Biofuels, Biomass, Hydrogen fuel cells, or Geothermal
The WIB Green Initiative Committee identified regional workforce issues pertaining to “green or clean” which centered on the need for better public outreach for green businesses and the need to better inform local government officials – both elected officials and staff involved with building permit approvals – on the available green building practices developed and how to implement them at the local level.
County Employment: Demand for Technicians
Tulare County businesses identify an increasing need for mid-skilled level technicians with academic studies in biology, microbiology, chemistry, organic chemistry, algebra, statistics and physics. Discussions with regional educators indicate that students with these high levels of academic background are very likely to continue on an educational path to a four-year degree, and more likely an advanced degree in either physical science or life science.
WIB Green Initiative Committee: Goals
- Improve outreach and marketing of WIB to Green Firms
- Develop a Green Directory to market green businesses in Tulare County
- Develop pre-apprentice/work-study program for environmental technician training
- Create career mapping for green jobs, including WorkKeys applications to existing jobs
WIB Green Initiative Committee: Accomplishments to Date
- Committee members were identified and selected after researching selected industry sectors and outreach to individual companies identified as potential “green” businesses. which included manufacturing, engineering services, and electrical contracting.
- Job growth and sub-sector dynamics of the manufacturing sector were examined to numerous green job titles, descriptions, and projections.
